James Rendi Working on the arm of a chair

James Rendi at Work in His Studio

CONTINUOUS ARM WINDSOR CHAIR

Mon.-Fri.(10am-4pm) April 21 - 25
Jim Rendi
#WD2608
Brookfield Campus

The continuous arm Windsor first appears during the post revolutionary war period in the 1790s. There were about a dozen chair makers in New York who introduced this new chair design which uses a shield shaped seat and a one piece arm that is bent in two directions. Students in this weeklong intensive class will learn how to prepare and bend the bow, shape the shield seat design, drill all holes by eye and go home with their own finished chair. The group will use methods and joinery techniques which date from the 18th century. All wood will be hand split and all the turnings will be supplied by the instructor.

FURNITURE DESIGN THROUGH COMPOSITION

Mon./Tues. (10am-4pm) June 16 - 17
Steve Skonieczny
#WD2808
Brookfield Campus

Finding inspiration for a piece of furniture can come from many places: a particular piece of wood, interest in reproducing an existing design or fulfilling a particular need can all be the beginning of a new piece of furniture. In this two-day workshop, we will begin with that idea or inspiration for a piece of furniture, starting with rough sketches and working through scale drawings, full scale drawings and mock ups we will develop that idea into something that we can build. Throughout the process we will talk about technical requirements, the aesthetics of the piece and how the materials can be used to add to the overall intention. During the class we will stop and have informal presentations so that everyone can talk about all the ideas and help each other through the designs.

Steve Skonieczny
#WD2908
Brookfield Campus

In this three-day class we will explore the possibilities of working with shop-sawn veneers. By being able to work with thick veneers opens up new possibilities for patterns, color, texture and decoration on a small or large surface. Shop-sawn veneers give you the breathing room to work with it as if it were solid wood. We will begin by learning about the band saw, and how to best set it up for re-sawing the veneers. This will be followed by talking about techniques of layout and joinery. There will be a presentation on various ways to compose the veneers into a balanced pattern and a discussion of substrates, adhesives and the options for pressing the veneers. Students will be given a small package of veneers to design and press a small panel.
