Lost Wax Casting

Large Silver NecklaceCast jewelry opens up possibilities to the jewelry artist who wants to go beyond fabrication and into a more 3-dimensional and substantial method of jewelry creation. Learn the art of lost wax casting, the process by which a model is carved in wax, invested in a plaster-like material, then "burnt out" with high heat. Students will gain experience with the entire process of lost wax casting, from carving wax models from their own designs, to the actual casting process using a vacuum casting machine, to finishing their castings into wearable pieces of jewelry. Some jewelry experience is encouraged.

This eight week evening course open to anyone will provide a thorough introduction to jewelry making from start to finish. Basic topics covered will include: tools and materials, sawing, soldering, piercing, fabrication, surface treatment, wire work, chasing, basic wax carving, and finishing techniques. Students with some metalsmithing experience can proceed at their own pace with individualized instruction.

Gold Metal Earrings with Colorful Stone and Enamel Embellishments This 6-week course open to anyone, will cover the basic skills of jewelry-making. Focusing on the art of metalsmithing, each student will be guided through the design and fabrication of a piece of jewelry of their own design, from concept to completion. Topics covered will include: various metals and their properties, basic tools and their usage, piercing and sawing, forming, decorative surface techniques and soldering with a gas fueled torch. Students with some experience may work at their own pace.

Cloisonne Enameling Workshop

enameled lid on silver jewelry box Enameling is an ancient art form that was used by the Egyptians and then perfected by the Byzantines. Today enamel is used to make colorful pieces of jewelry and dimensional art. This class will explore the method of cloisonné using fine silver wire with opaque and transparent enamels. Topics include which base metal to use for enamel, preparation of the base metal, foils, firing, surface finish, three dimensional enameling and setting a finished enamel. This workshop is open to students who have never enameled as well as those with experience.

Bangle Jump Ring Bracelet

Ringed and beaded braceletHave fun with jump rings in this workshop and go home with a bracelet that looks more complicated than it is. You'll learn to create a basic jump-ring chain bracelet, using pliers and a few simple techniques. Slipping beads over the jump rings along the way adds color and sparkle to the end result. This bracelet makes a great gift.

Students will explore the art of jewelry design and metalsmithing from start to finish. Topics covered will include: what to consider when designing a piece of jewelry, the various metals used in making jewelry, basic metalsmithing tools and their uses. The skills covered will include: bending with pliers, sawing, piercing, basic forming, decorative surface techniques as well as soldering with a gas fueled torch. Students will work with copper and silver. No previous experience is required.

Just in time for the holidays, learn how to apply the jewelry making skill of piercing (sawing) to make a pendant that you may wear yourself or give as a gift. Melissa will share her skills and knowledge on planning your piece and show you how to effectively use basic metalsmithing tools. You don't need prior metalsmithing experience to take home a completed project. But if you do have some metalsmithing experience, this class will provide you the opportunity to refine your sawing techniques. You will be provided with a list of supplies to bring to this class.

Make a Bracelet Out of Silver Forks

Learn how to apply the jewelry making skills of annealing, forming, and cutting while crafting an intricate and elaborate bracelet from two matching sterling silver dinner forks. Melissa will share her skills and knowledge in professional silversmithing and show you how to make an attractive heirloom bracelet. You don't need prior metalsmithing experience to take home your completed project. But if you do have some metalsmithing experience, this class will provide you the opportunity to refine your techniques. You may bring your own matching sterling silver forks or you may purchase a pair from the instructor.
