Spinners can create subtle or dramatic effects
by using novelty yarns. In this two day workshop students
will focus on two-ply spiral yarns, but will also discuss
singles, core spinning, and Navajo plying. The group will
be encouraged to bring various threads, fibers, and beads
as well as commercial yarns they find inspiring. We will talk
about simple methods of using these yarns with an emphasis
on hand knitting. Students should come to the workshop with
a basic understanding of wheel spinning and an ability to
make different sized yarns.

Brookfield Campus
No sewing is required in this unique weekend
workshop open to anyone. Memory, sentimentality and the common
place will be the themes and inspirations. Using favorite
recycled materials like cloth, paper and metal, students will
piece and glue their materials into a fabulous wall hanging
quilt. Students will make artistic statements with the textures
and color harmonies from fabrics such as worn out clothing
and household linens. They will also incorporate sentimental
objects such as family images, letters, printed emails, appointment
book pages, drawings and diary entries into their quilts and
blend in those every day objects about to be discarded such
as grocery lists, broken china, candy wrappers, etc. The group
will learn how to manipulate their materials and experiment
with adhesives, starches and lacing. Other topics covered
will include: braiding, making ruffles, stitching, composition
and patterning. The result will be an artwork of personal
meaning and complexity.

#FI3508
Brookfield Campus
This one day class is open to students of
all levels and backgrounds who wish to experiment and work
with a variety of materials. We will start the class by creating
designs on paper using different mediums and techniques. These
papers will then become our palette as we create repetitive
patterns that will be used as a foundation to explore and
experiment with layering, texture and color. We will investigate
the way shapes are grouped together to form various patterns,
and will exploit these findings to create unusual and beautiful
designs. Students are encouraged to bring a wide variety of
papers in different colors and patterns. A smock or old clothes
are strongly suggested.

THE SERENITY OF
SPINNING
Weds.-Sun. (10am-4pm) June 18 - 22
Cherri Hankins
#FI3708
Brookfield Campus
Many spinners will acknowledge that the
greatest product of spinning is not the yarn itself, but the
sense of well-being and serenity that accompany the activity.
By working step-by-step on the various fundamentals of spinning,
participants in this five day class will focus on relaxed
movement and gestures to draft fibers, then to treadle the
wheel and finally to combine those two tasks. The cyclical
rhythms of the wheel will set the tone for spinning wool singles,
then plying those singles together and then on to Navajo plying.
Afternoons will be divided, combining our wheel time with
supporting activities like washing wool, carding or combing
wool and simple dyeing procedures so we have lustrous, colorful
wool to spin as the week progresses. All levels are welcome.
Students who have their own wheels may bring them.
$615 for members / $640 for non-members
