Have you ever wanted to learn to weave? Not had time to weave in a few years and need a refresher course? Or, would you like help with a new project and the company of other weavers? Join us and learn to wind a warp, dress the loom and finish a woven piece. We will explore basic weave structure using both color and various threading and treadling techniques. Intermediate weavers will work on a project of their choice with help from the instructor in planning, setting up the loom and proper weaving technique. Bring your lunch and plan to enjoy the studio and the company as you enjoy this wonderful craft.

Learn the basics of authentic Japanese stencil dyeing in this 5-day class. The Japanese process of Katz requires the use of a stencil and rice paste resist to create patterns on fabric. We’ll design and make stencils (many examples and ideas will be provided), make and apply rice paste onto fabric using our stencils, and paint fabrics with dyes. By the end of the class you will have up to 3 yards of uniquely patterned fabric suitable for quilt making, clothing, or other textiles projects, as well as a silk scarf, at least one finished stencil, and materials to make more stencils. Materials will be provided.

Navajo Patern on the loom

Navajo weavers are famous for their weavings featuring bold geometric patterns in high contrast colors. Navajo weavings are weft-faced tapestries that have no fringes but instead have woven-in twined edges and tassels. In this fun half-day workshop we’ll learn to warp and weave miniature Navajo-style rugs on simple cardboard looms that you will make. No previous weaving experience is required.

CREATE A FABRIC COLLAGE

Work magic on plain cotton fabric using transparent fabric paints, crayons, stamps and transferred images. We will tear, fuse, emboss and print to produce a wonderful layered piece of art fabric which may be further enhanced by the addition of hand embroidery, beads and scraps of old lace and vintage trim.

The Round Picnic Quilt

Make a fun and charming 60” round quilt perfect for picnics, tea parties or a trip to the beach! Various techniques will be explored including piecing, scrap or string quilting, and appliqué. Discuss issues specific to working in a round format such as working from the center outward, as well as creating a fanciful composition. Choose a new favorite technique to focus on in class. Create whimsical edgings to finish off your quilt. Plan on finishing your completed picnic quilt at home. Beginners are welcome, but you must know the basics of how to use a sewing machine. Sewing machines will be provided if you do not have your own.

WEAVING IN THE NAVAJO TRADITION

Learn traditional Navajo techniques for warping and weaving on an upright Navajo loom and use them to create a weaving of your own design. This intensive 3-day workshop is open to everyone, no previous experience is required. A supplies list will be provided, you may bring your own supplies or order a complete supplies package and loom in advance from the instructor. A complete supplies package including loom is $150.00.

Find your fashion sense. Design and construct a sleeveless garment of carded and dyed wool roving that is finely feathered in layers and then wet felted to complete the fabric. Minimal sewing is involved for some seams and embellishments. Vests and lightweight shells can be pullover style or buttoned, pinned, wrapped or tied. Needle felting can be used to finish design details. Bring an idea of color, surface design and style of vested garment.

EXPERIMENTAL WEAVING WITH FOUND OBJECTS & METALS

Think out of the loom, learn how to weave with copper and silver and incorporate found objects. Topics covered will include: how to prepare the warp (made of metal wires), setting up the loom with silver, copper or a combination of both wires and the possible designs using these techniques. You’ll design your own pieces, dress the look and weave designs. We’ll explore using crystal, sea glass or pearls and other interesting items to decorate your metal weavings. After the pieces are woven, they can be framed or trans-formed into sculptures. Materials will be provided.

Stiched Embroidery Painting of a Goddess with Basket

Revisit the mysteries that you create in your sleep and transform one of these dreams into a small embroidery. As you spend time drawing and stitching your dream, new understanding of it’s symbols may arise. You can use any dream, recent or vintage, as long as it’s still vivid for you. Students are welcome to use any type of stitching they like. There will be basic instruction in punch needle embroidery for those who want it. There will also be some guidelines for respectful sharing of dreams.
