This workshop will begin with a discussion
of basic pastel materials. The group will explore the types
of pastels available and their various purposes, types of
pastel papers and supports, the use of fixatives, and caring
for finished works. There will be a brief review of basic
color theory as well. Topics covered will include: purposes
of a value range, development of form and volume and the use
of atmospheric perspective. The optional technique of under
painting with watercolors will be also be demonstrated. Students,
who have watercolors and would like to try this approach,
may bring their watercolor paints and brushes to class. The
class will work from a still life set up or from photographs
students may wish to bring or, weather permitting, from the
landscape. Students will gain an understanding of the process
of painting with pastel and how to compose a picture on paper
and how to begin by blocking in color. Various techniques
