Jeff Zamek
#CL3808

Many potters are buying and then firing their functional pottery and sculpture in electric kilns. What are the five most common mistakes potters make when purchasing electric kilns? Find out this and more during this three hour "short shop." Jeff will recommend the best electric kilns to buy plus how to obtain a fair price, what size to consider, and how to use kiln computers. Lectures and demonstrations on kiln loading, shelving, and pottery placement within the kiln will be provided to insure reliable, accurate firings. Clay and glaze defects caused by electric kiln firing will also be covered, showing the causes and corrections. Electrical requirements and wiring codes for each type of kiln will also be discussed. With this information potters will be able to purchase, fire, repair and maintain their electric kilns.

AMERICAN RAKU FIRING WEEKEND

Sat./Sun.(10am-4pm) June 21 - 22
Barbara Allen
#CL4108

American raku is a magical process created with alchemy, fire and smoke. The group will load their glazed work into a simple kiln that is easy to replicate. One hour later they will pull the white hot ceramics from the kiln with long metal tongs and gently drop them into a container filled with combustible materials. We will then close up the container to create a reduction atmosphere that will produce unusual one-of-a-kind ceramics with shimmery smoky surfaces. Students will learn the history of Japanese and American raku and participate in the preparation of glazes unique to this process. Tried and true glaze recipes will be shared as well as information on commercial glazes that work well in this process. Students will need to bring several small pieces of bisque-fired work fire. Join us for this exciting and informative weekend!
