GAS WELDING

No prior experience is required for these concentrated weekend workshops in gas welding techniques for artwork. Open to anyone, the workshop will provide hands on experience in oxy-acetylene welding. Topics covered will include: the proper use of tools and equipment, safety concerns, materials issues, and how to set up an effective welding workstation in a studio environment. Students should come prepared with notebook and appropriate (non-flammable) clothing. The basic techniques presented will enable students to continue welding on their own.

$240 for members / $265 for non-members

SIMPLE LOCKS AND LATCHES

Blacksmiths with forging experience will appreciate this weekend workshop in how to design, forge and fabricate door/gate latches and simple locks. The group will explore warded and screw type locks, dead bolts, rotating locks and padlocks. Students can expect to forge out a simple door latch set or possibly even a simple padlock.

$240 for members / $265 for non-members

TOOLS & JIGS FOR BLACKSMITHING

Come and learn all about simple jigs and tools that can make forging projects easier. Students will learn about bending and scrolling forms, welding and drilling fixtures, forging dies, stake tools and punches. This will be mostly a lecture class with some small forging by way of explanation by example. Students don't need much experience, but those with welding/fabricating or forging experience will greatly benefit from this workshop.

$165 for members / $190 for non-members

This intensive two-day workshop will introduce students to a variety of basic hinges and pintles historically referred to as straps and pins. The group will investigate traditional hinges used for doors, cabinets and chests including: butterfly/dovetail, side hinges, chest hinges, spline, cross garnet, English strap, Dutch, pad hinges, H and H&L. The process of making pintles, forge-welded and one-piece, will also be covered. This class is for students with a minimum of basic forging knowledge including some forge welding experience.

INTRODUCTION TO BLACKSMITHING

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to forge a piece of metal, then come join this hands on class in the basics of blacksmithing. Students will learn about: safety, tools, hammer control, controlling the fire in the forge and how to forge hot metal on an anvil. This class is a great introduction or refresher course for those with limited experience. Students will make a few small projects over the two days of class.

HAND FORGED KNIVES

This intensive five-day course has been designed for those with a basic knowledge of forging who are interested in making hand forged high performance knives. The group will explore the entire process from start to finish. Topics covered will include: blade function and design, selection of steel, forging techniques, grinding, heat treatment, handles and safety issues. Students will gain understanding of the techniques and importance of forging blades to shape at low temperature while they work using a gas forge. Techniques of differential heat treatment and its importance will also be covered. Each student will make a knife of their own design. Tools will be supplied, but students may also bring their own.

$615 for members / $640 for nonmembers
