Spring 2008
COIL BASKETRY WORKSHOP
Sat./ Sun. (10am-4pm) June 21 - 22
Miani Carnevale
#BA2708
Brookfield Campus
Carbon-dated to 9000 B.C., basketry is one
of the oldest crafts of primitive man. In Africa and the Americas,
it predates pottery. Coiling is thought by some to be the
most sophisticated form of the basket weaving and the most
adaptable to contemporary fibers. In an environment that encourages
play and exploration, students in this workshop open to adults
and teens will learn the ancient basket weaving technique
of coiling to create a vessel intended to carry your vision
of a desired future. Through the use of color, texture and
embellishment, the group will acquire the skills to coil baskets
that are uniquely their own as they transform this ancient
craft into a 21st century creation. Journaling, silent walks
in nature and group sharing will assist students in determining
what events, stories, people, desires and dreams that make
up the contents of their baskets. Students will discover how
coiling can be a soothing, meditative practice and vehicle
for self discovery. Learn to move out of your head and into
your body and realign with your natural, internal rhythm.
More than a technique, it's a way of life and means of connecting
more deeply with your essential self. No experience is necessary.
Just bring curiosity and a sense of adventure to class.
